Eye on the Enemy: Tip #3 Weed Watching
The number 1 enemy of your lawn has got to be weeds! Not only are they ugly but if you live in the eastern part of Australia some can be painful to those bare feet.
Luckily, with the right treatment and regular attention, your lawn can bounce back and be that lovely happy batch of green you and your family needs.
The potential for weeds to pop up in your lawn is high – if you have thin grass or bare spots, you’ll find a weed that’s prepared to jump in and enjoy the sunshine.
That’s why it’s important to keep the lawn healthy and vigorous by feeding regularly and removing any weeds as soon as you notice them.
Left to their own devices, they’ll quickly take over and smother your grass as they’re extremely competitive, and will take up available food and moisture very quickly.
The most widespread offenders, among a great many others, on the weeds list are:
• Dandelion
• Creeping oxalis
• Bindii
These are all ‘broadleaf’ weeds (that is, they are not grassy weeds) and are reasonably easy to keep on top off with a selective lawn weedkiller. But timings is key. Include weed control in Winter to tackle Bindii and/or early Spring for most other broadleaf weeds and this will hopefully stop them from taking over as the weather warms.
If you prefer a granular product, use Scotts Lawn Builder + WeedKill Slow Release Lawn Fertiliser will successfully combat 16 of the most common broadleaf weeds. However, this treatment should not be used on Buffalo varieties, Santa Ana or grass alternatives like lippia and dichondra as it may damage them.
Scotts Lawn Builder Weed, Feed & Green-Up Hose-on will kill the 10 most common lawn weeds in Australia, including bindii, clover, dandelion and other broadleaf weeds. If you’re unsure of your lawn type or know your grass is a Buffalo variety, use Scotts Lawn Builder Weed, Feed & Green-Up Hose-on.
