Top 5 Indoor Plant Trends to Watch this Year
Indoor plants have well and truly earned a place in our homes, both as an interior design tool and for their health and air purifying benefits! As we continue to embrace the urban jungle look, many of us are wanting to tap even more into our indoor beauties and home design trends.

Coloured Foliage
Many of us are looking for bold splashes of colour, not just in home décor, but in plants too, so indoor plants with colourful foliage have stepped into the limelight - and make for great conversation starters!
Philodendron ‘Pink Princess’ is taking centre stage in homes around the country and for good reason. It’s a real show-off, with flamboyant pink variegated foliage. You’ll also love Caladium ‘Strawberry Star’, with gorgeous heart-shaped leaves in shades of pink and white. Philodendron ‘Imperial Red’ plants are trending because it ticks two important boxes – tough and beautiful. It displays striking burgundy-red new growth, as well as deep red leaf veins and stems, and with space, it will create a bold, beautiful feature in any room.

High Maintenance but Irresistible
If you feel like you’ve mastered the art of growing indoor plants, you might be ready for more of a challenge, so look out for these high-maintenance but irresistible indoor beauties.
Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’ falls perfectly into this category. Its dark, almost black velvety leaves and contrasting silver veins leave you wanting more, but keeping it thriving can be challenging. Grow it somewhere warm and humid with bright indirect light and back of the watering in winter. You can also add Caladiums and the infamous Fiddle Leaf Fig to your list of challenging indoor plants that are well worth the effort.

Low Maintenance & Loving It
If on the other hand, you want the look without the hard work, then you should look at these low-maintenance indoor plants. They’re reliable, easy to grow and fill your home with greenery for little effort.
One of the easiest indoor plants to look after has to be the Snake Plant. It thrives in both low and bright light and requires basically no watering. Best of all the tall, spiky stems are wonderfully architectural looking and bring drama to any space. Zanzibar Gem, also commonly known as the ZZ Plant, is another virtually unkillable plant that offers great foliage and form all year round. If you like the floor-to-ceiling look, then you’ll love Philodendron ‘Brasil’ with its stunning heart-shaped foliage that is splashed with green and gold. This one doesn’t like to be overwatered and can be a real feature cascading down bookshelves or dripping from hanging baskets.

Oldies but Goldies
These recent lockdown years have made us yearn for better times and that nostalgia extended to our choice of plants. As a result, many old-fashioned plants have made a serious comeback.
Well, thanks to us all pining for the past, Hoya’s have made it to the hot list of indoor plants once again. Only this time there is an enormous variety to choose from; everything from variegated forms to heart-shaped leaves and some that look like they’ve been spattered with stars. Maiden Hair Ferns, Palms, Monsteras and Rex Begonias are also back in the limelight.

Fern-tastic Foliage
Along with the nostalgia for familiar or old-fashioned plants, we’ve seen the return of ferns filling homes, cafes and shops with their lush foliage.
No wicker furniture is complete without a Boston or Fishbone fern. Amongst the parade of classic ferns, you’ll also find other unique varieties that are setting their place in history like Phlebodium ‘Davana’, which is relatively new to the Australian market. It displays blueish foliage with a unique wavy leaf shape and is remarkably dry-tolerant for a fern. Display ferns in cane hanging baskets or wicker plant stands for a truly retro 70's look.
