Scotts Osmocote® Orchid Mix
Size: 10L
Main product features
A specially formulated, free-draining potting mix that provides the ideal root environment for growing show-quality orchids, including all epiphytic and terrestrial orchids. It includes Scotts Osmocote® that feeds for 6 months as well as a wetting agent to help water soak in
When to use
FEATURES
- Boosted calcium for stronger plants and stems and to help control diseases
- Wetting agent assists moisture to soak into the mix and helps roots absorb nutrients
- Certified to meet the Australian Standard for Premium potting mixes
SUITABLE FOR
- All terrestrial (roots growing down into potting mix or soil) and epiphytic (aerial roots) orchids
- Safe to use for new plants - the controlled release of nutrients means it will not burn soft leaves or tender young roots
NOT SUITABLE FOR
- Don't use for phosphorus sensitive Australian native ground orchids like greenhoods, donkey and sun orchids - use Scotts Osmocote® Professional Native Potting & Planting Mix instead
- Don't use in hydroponic growing systems or ponds
- Don't use on lawns - use only specifically named lawn topdress soils on grassed areas
HOW TO USE
- Use Orchid Mix straight from the bag - don't mix it with other materials. Close the bag tightly after use
- Choose a clean container with large drainage holes and partly fill it with fresh mix out of the bag
- Carefully knock the plant to be potted up from its existing pot and loosen the root ball. If the plant is congested, separate into either individual pseudo bulbs or groups of 3-4 bulbs. Trim off any dead or damaged roots
- Place the orchid in the centre of the pot with the crown just below the lip of the pot and clear of the top of the mix when repotting is complete - don't 'bury' pseudo bulbs)
- Add mix in and around the roots, working it in with your fingers if necessary
- Tap the new pot or container gently on the bench to help the new mix settle in and around the roots - do not pack it down
- Water the pot thoroughly (until water runs from the drainage holes) then allow it to drain freely. If necessary, top the mix up again to the suggested level
- Place the pot or container in the shade for a few days to allow the plant to settle and acclimatise before moving back to its permanent home
Most orchids have fairly thick, fleshy roots, so it is important to use only a specially formulated Orchid Mix for them - normal potting mixes are too dense and retain too much moisture which could cause roots to rot
Epiphytic orchids like Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchids) and Dendrobium have aerial roots, so never set them too deeply in pots - use stakes to hold them in place securely
WHEN TO USE
- Orchids are best repotted in mid Spring, or immediately after they have finished flowering
- Avoid Winter or Summer as the extremes of temperature may stress plants
