When to use
FEATURES
- Boosted calcium for stronger plants and stems and to help prevent diseases
- Wetting agent assists moisture to soak into the potting mix and helps roots absorb nutrients
- Certified to meet the Australian Standard for Premium potting mixes
SUITABLE FOR
- All terrestrial (roots growing down into potting mix or soil) and epiphytic (aerial roots) orchids
- Safe to use for new plants - the controlled release of nutrients means it will not burn soft leaves or tender young roots
NOT SUITABLE FOR
- Don't use for phosphorus sensitive Australian native ground orchids like greenhoods, donkey and sun orchids - useScotts Osmocote®Professional Native Potting & Planting Mix instead
- Don't use in hydroponic growing systems or ponds
- Don't use on lawns - use only specifically named lawn topdress soils on grassed areas
HOW TO USE
- Use Orchid Mix straight from the bag - no further additives required
- Select a clean pot with large drainage holes and partly fill it with new potting mix
- Carefully knock the plant from its existing pot and loosen the root ball. If the plant is congested, separate into either individual pseudobulbs or groups of 3-4 bulbs. Trim off any dead or damaged roots
- Place the orchid in the centre of the pot with the crown just below the lip of the pot and clear of the top of the potting mix when repotting is complete - don't 'bury' pseudobulbs
- Add the potting mix in and around the roots, working it in with your fingers if necessary
- Gently tap the new pot down to help the new potting mix settle in and around the roots. Do not pack the potting mix down
- Thoroughly water the plant and allow it to drain freely. If necessary, top the potting mix up again to the suggested level of 2-3cm below the rim
- Place the pot in a sheltered spot for 5 days to allow the plant to settle and acclimatise before moving it to a permanent home
TIP: Most orchids have fairly thick, fleshy roots, so it is important to use only a specially formulated Orchid Mix for them - normal potting mixes are too dense and retain too much moisture which could cause roots to rot.
Epiphytic orchids like Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchids) and Dendrobium have aerial roots, so never set them too deeply in pots - use stakes to hold them in place securely
WHEN TO USE
- Orchids are best repotted in mid Spring, or immediately after they have finished flowering
- Avoid Winter or Summer as the extremes of temperature may stress plants
ONGOING PLANT CARE
- Scotts Osmocote® Orchid Premium Potting Mix contains a balanced fertiliser up to 6 months - additional fertiliser may be required in time, depending on plant needs
- Avoid allowing plants to dry out - plants should be watered immediately after potting and frequently enough to keep the potting mix moist (not wet)
- Plants should be re-potted with new potting mix when they have outgrown the pot or after 12-18 months
