A lot of people might say they would love to do some gardening but lack the space or the right garden to do it. Well, there is some good news, with vertical gardening anyone can do it! All you need is some time and a good imagination and you can have a blossoming vertical garden in no time. Many like to use vertical gardens to grow kitchen herbs but they are a fantastic investment even if you just want to add a little character to your garden.
Low Budget Options
You would be amazed at what you can do with limited expense when creating your vertical garden. Here are some of the great things you can do in the DIY and recycled range.
Recycled Chest Of Drawers
If you are planning on throwing out an old chest of drawers, don’t be so hasty. You can fill the drawers up with some healthy soil and stagger the drawers in a shelf-like manner. Pop any number of potted plants on the top and you have yourself a readymade vertical garden. You can even paint it to give it that extra bit of style.
Pallet Garden
These are easily accessible and many people make a living constructing furniture out of pallets. To turn one into a vertical garden all you have to do is staple some landscaping fabric to the bottom and add soil.
Shoe Hanger
These are cheap and can be easily attached to any wall or fence in your garden. Simply add soil to each pocket and you are ready to go. This can be a brilliant one for a herb garden as you can only fit one plant per pocket.
Old Wooden Ladder
When your old wooden ladder is starting to lose its reliability and getting a bit creaky, a great way to make sure it doesn’t go to waste is to bridge over the steps with some scrap wood to secure the structure and us the new platforms to house potted plants. Add a touch of colourful paint to brighten it up too.
Recycled Plastic Bottles
We are always throwing plastic bottles into recycling, but why not keep a collection to use as a vertical garden on a wall or fence. This idea is inspired by a Brazilian design firm called Rosenbaum, and they used this vertical garden idea across a large number of Brazilian homes during a series of makeovers. It works by cutting the bottles and hanging them horizontally with a clothesline.
Options When Budget Isn’t An Issue
If you have a little more room in the budget you can try some more expensive materials. If that is your taste then have a look at some of these quirky ideas.
Rain Gutters
If you have some old rain gutters that you are replacing then fantastic, otherwise this could be a little costly if you go with some nice rustic metal gutters. We would recommend drilling some holes in the bottom of the guttering and perhaps use some landscaping fabric to contain the soil more efficiently.
Stacked Planter Boxes
Again, unless you are able to salvage these or have them lying around this could be pricey but it looks amazing when done right. This idea looks great attached to a fence, suspended in the air or start from ground level.
A Bookshelf
This is another readymade option which looks great outdoors in either a small or a big garden. It is possible to buy these from a lot of home stores or if you are handy at DIY you can make one yourself, so this could be either a small or large budget option.
