But above all else, it is important and well worthwhile to do some research as to what other materials are available and which materials are suitable for cooking on or not, or are more environmentally friendly.
1. A Basic Fire Pit
A basic fire pit is dug in a circular shape in the ground. Seek advice on what materials to use and then make your fire pit as small or as large as you like.
2. A Raised Fire Pit
Contrary to popular belief, your fire pit doesn’t have to be actually sunk into the ground and you can build a raised one. Create a round, raised fire pit with a surrounding wall a bit like the top of a well. Then just pull up a chair and keep warm.
3. Go Square With Your Fire Pit
If you’re thinking of a raised fire pit, you don’t have to go for the conventional circular fire pit. Why not build up a square block and then sink your round fire pit into that. You can use decorative (but fireproof) materials to give the surrounding square that finishing touch of style.
4. Fire Pit In A Bowl
You may need to shop around for a suitably large and fireproof container but a fire pit in a bowl creates a really stunning display.
5. Embellish Your Fire Pit
If you have a circular fire pit in the ground, why not develop the surrounding area? You could lay a circular paving area around your pit and make the paving area as large as you require; standing room only or room for a chair or two.

6. Think Of Different Materials
Rather than digging your fire pit with stones and cement, is there something else you could convert? Old basin-shaped steel barbecues can gain a new lease of life when dug into the ground and converted.
7. An Easier Way To Create A Fire Pit In A Bowl
If you haven’t got the budget for a purpose made, fire pit in a bowl. Can you find and adopt an old circular barbecue and rather than sink it into the ground, build it up on a plinth or platform?
8. Up-cycling With Your Fire Pit
You've seen how you can turn your recycled items into seating options, but why not create a fire pit via up-cycling. If you haven’t got an old barbecue to use, think about what else you may be able to recycle.
An old steel drum or even a washing machine drum is a great way to recycle your waste and create a stunning fire pit to boot.
9. Give Your Fire Bit A Double Life
If you’ve created a raised fire pit, why not create a wooden lid for it so that it can double up as a coffee table on those hot summer days and then keep you warm at night.
10. Wood Burning Ideas
Don’t throw away old wood burners. Take them outside and create an upright and durable fire pit.
