A basic fire pit is dug in a circular shape in the ground. Seek advice on what materials to use and then make your fire pit as small or as large as you like.

Contrary to popular belief, your fire pit doesn’t have to be actually sunk into the ground and you can build a raised one. Create a round, raised fire pit with a surrounding wall a bit like the top of a well. Then just pull up a chair and keep warm.

If you’re thinking of a raised fire pit, you don’t have to go for the conventional circular fire pit. Why not build up a square block and then sink your round fire pit into that. You can use decorative (but fireproof) materials to give the surrounding square that finishing touch of style.

You may need to shop around for a suitably large and fireproof container but a fire pit in a bowl creates a really stunning display.

If you have a circular fire pit in the ground, why not develop the surrounding area? You could lay a circular paving area around your pit and make the paving area as large as you require; standing room only or room for a chair or two.

Rather than digging your fire pit with stones and cement, is there something else you could convert? Old basin-shaped steel barbecues can gain a new lease of life when dug into the ground and converted.
